When Women are Happy, Everyone is Happy :-)

No Ask J column today.

Last night, I had the pleasure of having my local, Chaska fitness boot camp, Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp, as a featured presenter at a Women’s Wellness night.

The theme of the evening was basically that women need to start taking as good care of themselves as they do of everyone else in their lives.  Women always put themselves second, third, fourth…well, you get the picture.

But, there is an inherent problem with that philosophy.  If women continue to neglect themselves, they become unhealthy, out-of-shape, tired and sick.  Then what good are they to the people they’re trying to take care of?  Not to mention, what kind of example are they setting for their children.

Ladies; do you want your children to grow up unhealthy, out-of-shape, tired and sick?

Nutrition Facts Label Decoded – Part 3

Janell Monson (my wonderful girlfriend, fellow personal trainer and nutrition specialist) is back for the final installment in her Nutrition Facts Label Decoded series. So far, her posts have rocked!  If you haven’t seen them, get caught up by clicking the following links:  Nutrition Facts Label Decoded – Part 1; Nutrition Facts Label Decoded – Part 2.

Here again is Janell:

Have you ever looked at an ingredient list and not known how to pronounce the majority of the ingredients?

I think we all have been there at one time or another.

Ya think this may be a sign that we should not put those “foreign” substances into our bodies?  I mean, you don’t need a degree in chemistry to understand that a carrot is good for you, but what the heck is sodium acid pyrophosphate or polysorbate 60?  I don’t know about you, but if it’s got a number in it, I’m thinking it’s not so natural.

Fat Burning Boot Camp Workout Video of The Week – #10

I’m going a little off the reservation with today’s Fat Burning Boot Camp Workout Video of The Week.

I wanted to get a little creative. :-)

You know, sometimes when it comes to indoor cardio at home you just don’t feel like going for a run.  If you don’t have a bike or a stepper at home what else can you do?  I’ve shown you various locomotion drills in the past, and they’re great!  However, if you use your imagination and a great Reactive Resistance Band Package you can create your own home-made Rowing Machine!

The rowing machine kicks @$$ for high-intensity interval training!

Check out this weeks Fat Burning Boot Camp Workout Video of The Week to see what I’m talking about:

The Law of Polarity

It’s a rainy Tuesday.  It would be a perfect day to just relax on a couch and study a great personal development book; tune up the weight loss mindset.

In the next part of our LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE series, we’re going to discuss the Law of Polarity.  The Law of Polarity is incredibly important when building a weight loss mindset.  It has a huge impact on our self-esteem and how we view ourselves.  This alone can make or break us on our quest for a healthy, fit and damn-sexy body that looks great naked.

Ying & YangThe Law of Polarity states that everything has an opposite.  You can’t have hot without cold; up without down; good without bad.  Everything has an opposite; two sides to the same coin if you will.  Think about it this way:  if there was no opposite of failure, how would you know what success is?

If you’ve never been out of shape, do you ever truly understand and appreciate being in shape?

How to Avoid the Freshman 15

I hate to say it, but summer is coming to an end. :-(

This means a new class of college freshman is about to begin the college journey!  It’s a super-exciting time, and it’s time for all the last minute preparation.  Parents and students are scrambling to get all the necessary dorm gear and school supplies.

But, what they should be most concerned about is fighting the scary trend of gaining 15+ lbs their freshman year in college, otherwise known as The Freshman 15.

Seriously, they might soon start calling it THE FRESHMAN 50 if someone doesn’t step in right NOW and educate these kids about proper training and sound nutrition.

I know firsthand how important this info is, and I wish someone shared it with me before I graduated high school.  I packed on my Freshman 15+ quick, and I didn’t even drink!

Before I share my top 10 tips to fight the freshman 15, let’s first identify why this is important, beyond the obvious health benefits:

It’s mailbag time!

Nutrition Facts Label Decoded – Part 2

Janell Monson (my wonderful girlfriend, fellow personal trainer and nutrition specialist) is back again this week for our Thursday Nutrition Post.  Last weeks post, Nutrition Labels Decoded was awesome!  Part 2 takes the information to the next level!  Here again is Janell:

Last week we took a high-level view of the Nutrition Facts Label.  We broke down the nutrition facts label into its key parts and talked about what to look for.  See Nutrition Labels Decoded – Part 1 to review.

Today, we’re going to take a deeper dive into the nutrient information.  Then, next week we’ll examine the ingredient list.

Fat Burning Boot Camp Workout Video of The Week – #9

Today’s Fat Burning Boot Camp Workout Video of The Week is going to be a little different.  Each week I deliver a FREE kick-@$$ High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout video.  These workouts are hands-down the most efficient and effective workouts you’ll find for rapid fat loss and fitness.

However, you can’t train with HIIT all the time.  You’ll burn out for sure.

Personally, I perform HIIT resistance/cardio workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  In a half-hour I blast my body, burn tons of calories and boost my metabolism through the roof for the rest of the day.  On Tuesday and Thursday I perform HIIT sprint workouts.  More metabolic boost along with speed development.  Minute for minute, sprint work is the very best type of cardio you can do.

But, as I’ve said you can’t be all HIIT all the time.  On the weekends I tone it down and do more traditional low-moderate intensity, longer duration, “fat-burning” cardio.

Side note:  while you burn a higher % of fat during low-moderate intensity cardio, you don’t burn nearly as many calories, and you don’t get the fat-burning metabolic boost for the rest of the day that comes with HIIT.

Question:  Why bother with low-moderate intensity cardio then?

The Law of Relativity

Happy Tuesday!

Over the past few weeks in our Tuesday Personal Development column, we’ve been discussing the weight loss mindset and it’s importance in reaching your weight loss and fitness goals.  We said that our lives are governed by certain LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE.  Over the next several weeks we’ll discuss a different law that has a direct effect on creating and maintaining your weight loss mindset.  Today, we’ll be discussing The Law of Relativity.

Now, we’re not going to go deep on Einstein’s law today; we’re going to look at it from a much more simple view point and apply it to our weight loss mindset.

28 Ways to Save Money So You Can Afford a Fitness Program

Today I need to go on a bit of a rant, but I’m also going to provide some solutions.  Here goes:

I am absolutely blown away by the number of people who struggle with health & fitness…

Wait.  That’s being too nice.

I’m absolutely blown away by the number of people who are fat, out of shape, unhealthy, take a laundry list of medications, and generally live unpleasant lives who won’t do whatever it takes to fix the situation – specifically, get out of bed early to workout and spend money to work with a fitness professional.

Now, here’s where I piss some people off.  Look, I know times are tough right now.  At least, that’s what the news says, and since so many people just go by what the news says, they create that reality in their own lives.  I’m not discrediting those folks who’ve lost their jobs or taken major pay cuts.  That’s a bitch and I wish you nothing but the best of luck to get back on your feet.  But, there are so many folks who’s situations have not changed, yet they still use the bad economy excuse.  That’s what I mean by creating a reality.  As long as you tell yourself the economy sucks, the more it will become your reality.  How is it that some people are making millions right now in a down economy while others wallow in their own self-pity?  The answer is simple:  You become what you think about.

OK.  That’s enough ranting and raving.  I said I was going to provide some solutions so here they are.  I was in the shower this morning and I was thinking, “What are ways people could afford to pay for a fitness boot camp program like Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp?  After all, it’s only $3 – $5 a day, and you get so much:  3 days of professional training, 3 days of non-class day workouts, done-for-you meal plans, continuing education, social support and more.”  Just off the top of my head here’s 28 ways you may be able to save $3 – $5 a day to afford a fitness program that will, by the way, lower your health care costs in the long run – that’s a whole different conversation…

  1. Eliminate the damn cafe coffee – a medium black coffee is $2 freakin’ dollars, and forget about the $4 – $5 froo froo drinks
  2. Eat at home and pack your lunch – I know people who spend $10 a day or more eating out!
  3. Buy the store brand instead of the name brands that have the same exact ingredients, yet cost more
  4. Buy groceries in bulk
  5. Use coupons
  6. Look for sales, but only buy what you need – not just because it’s on sale
  7. Don’t even think about fast food – for so many reasons
  8. Take shorter showers
  9. Don’t let the water run when you brush your teeth or shave
  10. Turn off the lights when you’re not using them
  11. Drop the movie channels from the cable bill- go for a walk instead
  12. Use Netflix instead of going to the movies, and if you do go to the movies forget about the way overpriced super-fattening junk food
  13. If you see something in a catalog that you want to buy, wait a week before ordering to see if you still really want it.
  14. Consider dropping your land line phone at home. Your cell phone may be
all you need and some come with free long distance services.
  15. Send free e-cards and save on postage.
  16. Don’t renew subscriptions to publications you don’t have time to read.
  17. Only use ATMs where you won’t be charged service fees.
  18. Wait a little longer between manicures (try doing one yourself!)
  19. Play golf less often, look for tee times when rates are reduced, or play at lower-cost public courses.
  20. If you own a house, shift your higher-rate credit card debt to a
lower-rate line of credit. Deduct the interest on your tax return.
  21. Raise the deductible on your homeowner’s and car insurance policies.
  22. Quit smoking!  Trade in the pack a day for a workout a day.
  23. Save all your change and use it to buy gifts next year.
  24. Cook in bulk and freeze.
  25. Turn down your home thermostat a couple degrees in the winter.
  26. Only do full loads of laundry and fill the dishwasher before running it.
  27. Sell stuff you don’t need or use anymore on eBay.
  28. Track your spending. If you write it all down, you’ll probably spend less. And you’ll know exactly where your money goes. You’d be amazed at how much is going towards things that contribute to weight gain and poor health!

Well, I’m sure I can come up with a bunch more, and if you stop and really think about it, so can you.

Look, I’m not trying to come at anyone.  I just want to wake some folks up.

If you don’t take care of yourself now, you won’t be able to afford to later.  We simply can’t afford not to workout, and the best way to get it done is in a local fitness boot camp that’s fully comprehensive and provides a ton of support.

By the way, if you’ve got some more money saving tips please, please, please share them with a comment below.  Thanks.
