Acupuncture & Weight Loss – Part 2

Mason McClellan from the MN Clinic of Integrated Medicine is back with Part 2 of Acupuncture and Weight Loss.

So what pattern are you?

In the previous post I gave a quick intro to acupuncture and how it regards to weight loss.

When a patient comes in to the clinic he/she presents us with signs and symptoms – a combination of how you look, feel, and exhibit.  We look at objective findings, subjective observation and the most important factor, feedback/information from you, the patient.

When all of this “data” is put together we in Chinese Medicine come up with a pattern diagnosis.  These patterns then become our basis for treatment and the protocols we follow to re-balance your body.  Your body is usually either too hot, too cold, too dry, or too damp to “properly” function.  These imbalances are what cause the signs and symptoms that brought you to the clinic in the first place.  We use acupuncture and herbal therapy to put you back on the right track.

Alright, back to weight loss and the patterns.

Video Boot Camp – Free Workout #9

Here’s the latest update on Online Video Boot Camp:

Here’s your workout for the day:

The workout uses a 50:10 format where you perform each exercise for 50 seconds with maximum effort followed by a 10 second rest/transition for a total circuit time of 5 minutes.  Rest 1 minute and repeat for a total of 5 rounds equaling a 20-minute workout.

Exercise #1: Deadlift

Exercise #2: Chest Press

Exercise #3: Split Squat

Exercise #4: Bent Row

Exercise #5: Posterior Overhead Reach & Step

I FIRED the company that was supposed to get it up and running.  The delays and terrible customer service were just too much to bear.  Have no fear though.  I signed a contract with the best company in the business the other day, and it’s looking good.  It’s big bucks, but it will be well worth it.  I’m super-excited to work with them.  The best part – I can actually call and talk to a human being when I need help :-)

They promise to have a rough site up and running by the 1st of November.  In the meantime, I will continue to provide you with Online Video Boot Camp for FREE via my blog. That’s right! It’s yours FREE!

The workout uses a 30:30 format (same format as Workout #7) where you perform a strength exercise for 30 seconds followed by an active recovery cardio exercise for 30 seconds.  We’re going to perform 5 different strength exercises to target 5 major movement patterns – Double Leg, Pull, Single Leg, Push, Core.

Exercise #1: Front Squat

Exercise #2: High Row

Exercise #3: Single-legged Deadlift

Exercise #4: Overhead Press

Exercise #5: Side Pillar (Core Hold)

Top 12 Superfoods -Part 3

October is SUPERFOOD month!  We’re breaking down the Top 12 Superfoods for you.  We will touch on the nutrient contents as well as tips for each food.  Each week we are focusing on 4 Super foods.

Remember a Super food has additional health benefits above and beyond providing your body energy from calories.

9)  Bison also known as buffalo

It’s tender like beef but sweeter and richer in flavor and is not raised like conventional beef cattle with hormone – and antibiotic-laced feed.  Bison can be eaten in place of red meat without the worry of added fat or cholesterol.  Nutritionists are beginning to recommend bison over beef for its superior nutrition profile.
Star Nutrients: Protein and Calcium
Tip: Heart Healthy – The American Heart Association recommends eating bison meat because of its nutritional profile and low-fat, low-cholesterol status.


Conjugated Linoleic Acid:
Bison meat is one of the few meats high in CLA, which has been found useful in promotion weight loss.

HALF THE CALORIES:  BISON MEAT HAS HALF THE CALORIES OF PORK OR CHICKEN.

10)  Pumpkin and brightly colored sweet potatoes

These are sweet or savory year-round.  The bright orange flesh of pumpkins indicates that they are loaded with the powerful antioxidant beta-carotene.  One cup of boiled pumpkin provides 310 % of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A.
Star Nutrients: Carotenoids and Fiber
Tip: Pumpkins are 90 % water.

11)  Soy

Soy can lessen the effects of heart disease and menopause.  Soybean based products contain all of the essential amino acids.  They are also an excellent source of B vitamins, potassium, zinc and other minerals, as well as soluble fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
Star Nutrients: Protein, Phytoestrogens, and Omega-3 fatty acids
Tip: EAT MORE SOY!  Incorporate soy-based products in your diet by adding soy protein to a smoothie, using firm tofu in stir-fry and drinking soy beverages.  You can also look for soy-based cereals, breads, and yogurts.

12) Oatmeal

Oatmeal ‘s slow-burning complex carbohydrates prolong the feeling of fullness and prevent blood sugar from rising too quickly.  The soluble fiber in oatmeal fills you while lowering blood cholesterol.  Oatmeal also contains plant protein, essential for building muscle.  Oatmeal is one of the few foods rich in silicon, a mineral responsible for building beautiful skin, hair, bones and teeth.  Oats also contain phosphorus, essential for brain and nerve growth during youth.
Star Nutrients: Soluble fiber, Protein, Complex carbohydrates, and Silicon
Tip: REV UP YOUR OATMEAL:  Add one tablespoon each of ground flaxseed, bee pollen and wheat germ you really rev up the nutritional profile.  Add fresh berries and you’ve increased your nutrition substantially.

Video Boot Camp – Free Workout #6

Due to delays that are out of my control, Online Video Boot Camp
is not yet available. However, I’m not letting that affect my patiently
waiting customers. To solve the issue, I’m running this Alpha version.

Until my web folks can get things running properly, I’m offering Online Video Boot Camp for FREE. That’s right! It’s yours FREE!

The Alpha version will run here on my main blog. Workouts will be
added every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for you to follow. I’ll add

Here’s your workout for the day:

This workout uses a 40:20 Superset format, where you take two
exercises (upper body / lower body) and work them back to back for a
given period of time.  In this case, we’re going to complete two
10-minute circuits.

Perform each exercise for 40 seconds, followed by a 20 second rest/transition for a total of 10 minutes.

Be sure to perform a 5 -10 minute warm-up before you begin.

1. Alternating Push Press

2. Single-legged Deadlifts
