Happy Birthday

It’s Janell’s 28th Birthday!!

As many of you know, Janell is my girlfriend, best friend, confidant and major supporter.  It’s very fitting that this week I’m talking about inspirational figures in my life.  Janell is major inspiration to me in so many ways.  I can’t even begin to describe the support, love and faith she has given me over the past couple years, especially this last year as I completely changed courses in my life and started my boot camp programs and website.

Janell is one of the strongest people I’ve ever met.  She’s been through a lot in just a few short years; I’ve dished out quite a bit of stress for her myself :-b.  But, through all of it, she always takes the high road and knows that in the end everything will work itself out.  I think it’s that positivity and outlook on life that makes it so for her; kind of like the Law of Attraction we talked about in yesterday’s post.

For those of you who don’t know, Janell and I used to work together at Life Time Fitness.  That’s how we met.  She was one of my top trainers and eventually became my Lead Assistant Department Head – basically, she was my right hand.  She kept things running at the top notch, record setting level that the we became accustomed to when I was traveling and performing my other roles for the company.  We made one hell of a team along with my other assistants and program leads (thanks Nick, Liz, Phil, Derk and all the other previous assistants that were eventually promoted).  Who knew that our friendship, trust and faith in each other would eventually blossom into the amazing relationship we have today?  We certainly didn’t.  In fact, we still joke about how there was zero attraction between us for the first couple years we knew each other.  LOL.

3 Reasons People Fail to Lose Weight Fast & Keep it Off

Have you ever tried to lose weight and failed?

Have you ever worked really hard to lose weight and succeed only to have it all come back, and more?

I believe there are three key reasons why people fail to lose weight fast and keep it off.  Rapid fat loss is easily achieved once dieters understand these three keys.

The following are my top three reasons why people fail to lose weight fast and keep the unwanted pounds and inches off:

1.  Lack of Support

All the latest research has shown how critical it is for dieters to have a support system in place.  When times get tough, and they will, people need to have a community of positive people to turn to that will help them achieve their rapid fat loss.

2.  No Emphasis on Lifestyle Change

A very big reason people fail to maintain their rapid fat loss for a lifetime is a complete failure to focus on lifestyle changes.  Temporary fixes and fad diets need to be replaced by healthy habits and a new self-image.  People put too much emphasis on the “lose weight fast” part and not enough on the lifestyle changes necessary to keep the pounds from ever coming back.

3.  Paralysis by Analysis

Too often dieters wait for the perfect time or want to have the perfect plan in place before trying to lose weight fast and keep it off.  The plan only need be good enough to get started.  Creating a weight loss plan is mandatory, but not at the expense of never getting started on the road to rapid fat loss.  Create a plan centered around a support community and lifestyle changes, and then adjust the plan as necessary.

No More Fish Burps

I’ve got a quick post for you today.  A lot of people ask me about fish oils and Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).  They’re becoming incredibly popular and for good reason.

You’re smart enough to know that there is no miracle pill.  There’s no supplement or drug out there that’s going to change your life instantly as soon as you take it.

Visualization Leads to Actualization

I’m going to take a slight detour from our discussion of the Universal
Laws of Success
this week.  Today’s personal development post is about
a truly powerful weight loss mindset activity.

Like I said in yesterday’s post, I had a truly awesome weekend at Boot Camp Boot Camp.  It wasn’t just all the great stuff I learned for my boot camps though.  The best part of the weekend was being surrounded by fellow boot camp business owners who were so positive and determined.  The most successful boot camp owners had a crystal clear picture in their mind of what they wanted their business to look like.

Do you have a crystal clear picture of your healthy, fit, tight & toned, damn-sexy body?

Can you see it in your mind before it moves into the physical form?

Do! Or Do Not. There is NO TRY.

I just had the great pleasure of spending the weekend with some of the most positive and successful guys and gals in the weight loss and fitness boot camp business.  It was absolutely amazing to be surrounded by a bunch of doers who shared a common vision of running successful weight loss and fitness boot camps that truly change peoples’ lives forever.  These people aren’t trying to accomplish anything.  They’re just going out and making it happen.

You see, when you try something you already accept that it might not happen, and more than likely because of that attitude it won’t happen.

This weekend really reinforced the fact that you need to surround yourself with like-minded individuals to achieve your goals.  That holds true in business, fitness and life.  If you’re not seeing the results you want with your exercise and nutrition plan, or if you’re not even on one, then you better stop and take a look around you.  Are you surrounding yourself with doers, tryers, or worse yet, those who don’t even get in the game?

On of my favorite quotes of all time is from Yoda in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.  Watch the incredibly important video clip below:

Do.  Or do not.  There is no try.  Yoda’s words have always been a guiding light for me.  In fact, I believe they are so important that I immortalized them and will forever have them with me.  Set aside 15-minutes for this killer video.  Be sure to watch it all the way through to get the full lesson.

Post-workout Nutrition

Well, due to the feedback I got from my Look Great at the Lake Boot Campers and other readers, I’ve asked Janell to be a regular contributor to the Look Great Blog.  She loves doing it and loves to talk about nutrition so she’s all for it.

Post-workout Nutrition

I will argue that the MOST IMPORTANT meal of the day is the one that follows your workout.

WHY?

When exercising whether it be an aerobic workout or a strength training sessions we are ultimately depleting our muscles of stored glycogen as well as tearing down muscle fibers that need nutrients to build back up leaner and stronger.  Quick note for those who don’t “want to add muscle.” – remember, more muscle means more metabolism.  In other words, you want to add at least some muscle, and certainly maintain what you have, to maximize fat burning to get that tight and toned, sexy body that looks great naked!

The Window of Opportunity

“The Window of Opportunity” is very important when we refer to the post-workout meal.  Ideally your post-workout meal will happen within 45 minutes of completing your workout.  During this time your muscles are very sensitive to certain nutrients and hormones that aid in effective muscle recovery.
Benefits of refueling within 45 minutes include: 

  • recover more effectively
  • increase muscle mass
  • burn more body fat
  • enhance physical adaptations that are happening when you exercise
  • see results more rapidly

All benefits we want to achieve from our workouts.

You Snooze, You Lose

Beyond 45 minutes your muscles become less sensitive and efficient at replenishing glycogen stores (our bodies’ stored form of carbohydrate, or “quick energy”).  If you miss your opportunity for replenishing your muscles the next opportunity doesn’t happen until after your next workout.  Having a good supply of quick energy stored in your muscles will allow for harder, more effective workouts.  Missing this critical window of opportunity can and will dramatically slow results making it more difficult to reap the benefits of your workout.

Refueling- For glycogen replenishment carbohydrates are key and protein is necessary for muscle repair and recovery.  An ideal ratio of carbs to protein is 3:1.  Simple carbs and high quality protein sources are your best choices for quick quality replenishment and recovery.

Quality Choices- The best choice is liquid in the form of a shake.  This will be the fastest absorbing into your system.  Other quality choices include:  yogurt/milk and fruit, juice and cottage cheese, Gatorade and whey protein, or a quality ready to go drink.

Prograde Workout is an awesome choice for your post-workout meal.  It’s pre-stacked to give you a 2:1 ration.  When you add a cup of skim milk and a banana you get a delicios 3:1 post-workout shake.

Note: this mixture gives you 400 calories so you may need to cut the serving in half to get the desired calories.

The Exercise and Weight Loss Debate

First things first.  Welcome back from the awesome holiday weekend!  We finally got a beautiful long weekend in MN and the summer is over.  Oh well.

Anyway, between the site maintenance last week and the holiday yesterday, the blog schedule is a little off this week.  I’ve got a guest post for you today, Workout of the Week tomorrow and the Post-workout Nutrition article will be out this Thursday (sorry, we couldn’t give it to you last week).  I haven’t decided what I’m going to do Friday yet :-)   That’s actually because I’m going to be away at a 2-day training in Kentucky.  I’m heading off to Boot Camp Boot Camp!  2 days of boot camp business owners learning marketing, business, and of course more great butt kicking training methods!  I’ll see what creative spark gets fired and shoot something out on Friday for ya :-)

Now, let’s get on with today’s post.

You know, nothing bugs me more than people who make excuses of why they can’t exercise…until now.  Recently, there was an article in Time magazine that was basically trying to argue that exercise won’t make you lose weight and get fit!

Unfreakinbelievable!!!
