And, a few more things that are still kinda top secret ;-b

But, before we move forward into August, it’s time to recognize our June Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp Member of the Month!

I’m extra excited about this month’s member because of how far she’s come. It wasn’t just about weight loss for her, it was about getting her life back, being pain free, and being able to do things she couldn’t do before. Of course, she’s pretty psyched about losing 15 lbs in the past three months as well, not too mention needing an entirely new wardrobe since she joined Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp last fall.

Without further ado, in her own words, here’s my friend Denise Prince…

If someone had said to me one year ago that today I would be working out six days a week – 3 in a boot camp program and 3 in a walk run club; that I would be able to walk/run nearly 5 miles in 70 minutes, (and I would be looking forward to walk/running 10K) and that I would be 30 lbs or more lighter, I would have laughed for sure.

But to understand why, you have to understand where I was at one year ago. At 49 years of age, I was overweight – well over 200 lbs; walking a flight of stairs would leave me winded, and I suffered from nearly constant knee pain. In spite of all of this, Justin Yule assured me that I could perform the exercises in the Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp and see results. I thought he was crazy.

In spite of my doubts, when Justin started the 9:30am class in October 2009 I joined. Justin and I talked about my knees, and decided together that the first order of business was to rehab my knees. Most exercises were modified so to protect my knees and help them get stronger. In those first few months, the 5-minute warm up was a major workout!

Over time my knees started getting stronger. Less modification of exercises was needed and the warm up was just that – a warm up. I was getting stronger! My knees hurt less and walking stairs was no longer as difficult as it once was. By May of this year, I had dropped a few dress sizes, and things were going along pretty good. Then Justin offered 2 supplemental programs: Maximize Your Metabolism – concentrating on the nutritional aspect of getting fit—and Walk Run Club.

Signing up for MYM was easy. I knew that I needed to learn more about eating to fuel my body. Now, if you are not familiar with the MYM program, please do not confuse this with a “diet.” MYM teaches you how to eat to support your fitness goals. Combined with a “resting metabolic rate” test, I learned I wasn’t eating enough! And I learned I wasn’t eating often enough. Since the beginning of MYM (5/19/10) I’ve lost over 15 lbs.

The Walk/Run Club took a little more convincing. Once again Justin assured me that I could do this, and that by the end of the 16 weeks I would be able to complete a 5K. I borrowed Justin’s belief and signed up for the WRC. The first day was rough. 1 mile took me nearly 16 minutes! But I have followed the program, volunteered to test the new Mission Unbreakable program. And today (7/31/10) on our 70 minute run I made it 4.72 miles.

Now the math whizzes reading this have figured out that from October to May (8 months) I lost a little over 15 lbs, and from mid May to mid July (2 months) I lost roughly the same amount. What changed? I learned to eat correctly through MYM and I started “off day” cardio in the form of WRC.

I hope that you, the reader, will understand that I tell you this not to brag about what I have accomplished. Rather, to illustrate what Justin Yule and the Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp programs can help you accomplish.

Wow! How cool of a story is that. And, let me tell you my friends, it’s just the beginning for Denise!

Thanks for working so hard Denise. You deserve every bit of success you’ve had!

HAVE FAITH & TAKE ACTION!

As you know, we spend an inordinate amount of team researching and testing exercise variations and workout templates to best ensure that we bring the cream of the fitness crop your way each and every month.

Lots of other boot camps simply seek to just beat you down and get you tired with no rhyme or reason behind what they do. This results in limited results and lot of unwanted injuries.

However, everything we do at Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp in Chanhassen, MN and Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp ONLINE is based on sound exercise science and battle-tested, in the trenches real world experience.

I have always felt that it’s important to know why you’re doing what you’re doing when it comes to fitness because it helps reinforce the implementation of the necessary habits to get into the best shape of your life.

So I just wanted to take the time to briefly explain the method behind the madness of the incredible, cutting-edge Continuous 20-Minute Workouts coming your way this month.

What is it and how do you do it?

Continuous 20-Minutes is a density training bootcamp-style workout where the goal is to perform the same amount of work in less time and/or more work in the same amount of time or less.

Each workout consists of a 4-exercise circuit that works your entire body. Every 2 minutes you will perform 10 reps of each exercise (5 reps/side for unilateral movements) in the circuit as fast as you can with perfect form and technique.

The goal is to complete each circuit within 60-90 seconds and then you rest for the remaining time left in each 2-minute round. In other words, the faster your complete each round the more rest you get and visa versa.

You will perform 10 total rounds for an INSANE 20-minute metabolic workout.

If your completion time is 60 seconds or less then you need to INCREASE the intensity of your workout by increasing loads and/or using more advanced exercise variations.

If your completion time is longer than 90 seconds then you need to DECREASE the intensity of your workout by decreasing loads and/or using easier exercise variations.

Why does it work?

“Training Density” describes the amount of work completed in a certain period of time.

‘’Work” describes total training volume which is the number of reps you perform for each exercise times the loads/exercise variation used to do so.

The more work you complete in the same amount of time the greater the calorie burn and the greater the muscular demand resulting in improved fat loss and lean muscle gain.

To take training density to the next level, seek to complete MORE work in the SAME amount of time or LESS.

Since you must perform 10 reps of each exercise in the 4-exercise circuit, this can be accomplished by either increasing the load used or by using a more advanced exercise variation where applicable from week to week.

In other words:

10 reps for each exercise in the circuit X

4 total exercise within each circuit X

10 total rounds =

400 total reps in 20 minutes

For example, if you used a 10 lb dumbbell for all exercises within the circuit that means you would have performed 4,000 lbs of work in 20 minutes. Not too shabby!

However, if you progressed to using a 15 lbs dumbbell for all exercises within the circuit by the end of the phase that would mean you performed 6,000 lbs of work in 20 minutes. That’s 2,000 lbs more than you did in your first workout!

Now the only way your body could meet this increased workload is by boosting lean body mass eliminating unwanted body fat. Plus, since your heart rate will be elevated throughout the entire workout, your overall conditioning will go through the roof this phase.

This progressive overload is the key to making your body change. Simply seek to gradually move from Level 1 to 2 to 3 over the course of this month to best ensure you get the most out of your workouts. Just watch the fat melt away and the scale drop as you lose that unwanted weight!

Have you ever taken a good look at the labels of the leading brands of kid’s vitamins? On there you’ll find:

Aspartame, which is a VERY controversial artificial sweetener.

DiCalcium Phosphate, which is used in the “feed” that poultry eats.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, which NOBODY needs to be ingesting.

And all sorts of artificial colors.

Does that look NUTRITIOUS to you???

Ok, I know what you’re thinking:

“Yeah, that’s great. But what other choice do I have? If it doesn’t TASTE good, my kid’s not going to take it.”

Well, I may just have the answer to your prayers. But your child’s taste buds are going to have to decide. As a proud Prograde Partner I’m THRILLED to let you know they have just released an all-natural children’s vitamin. And they’ve gone to great lengths to taste test it with kids.

“I get here as soon as I can. It’s just so hard to get out of the house/office on time.”

Sound familiar?

Has life ever gotten in your way and made you late to your exercise program? Do you then just jump right into your workout?

I already know the answer for most of you out there because I’ve seen it daily for over a decade. Clients and members come flying in, give you a look of apology/guilt and then want to jump right into the workout.

So, what’s the problem with that?

Well, the fact is a proper warm-up will have a significant impact on the effectiveness of your workout. Now, I’m just not going to waste your time or mine harping on all the safety factors of warming up; nobody ever thinks they’re going to get hurt. Instead, I want to talk about all the reasons a proper warm-up will actually improve your weight loss efforts!

I feel like I’ve been preaching this subject (often times to deaf ears) forever. The funny thing is we talked extensively about this at Bootcamp Bootcamp this past weekend.

Let’s start with the benefits. Below is an excerpt from an article by exercise physiologist and fitness consultant Elizabeth Quinn. I’d say these benefits are pretty critical…

Increased Muscle Temperature – The temperature increases within muscles that are used during a warm-up routine. A warmed muscle both contracts more forcefully and relaxes more quickly. In this way both speed and strength can be enhanced. Also, the probability of overstretching a muscle and causing injury is far less.

Increased Body Temperature – This improves muscle elasticity, also reducing the risk of strains and pulls.

Blood Vessels Dilate – This reduces the resistance to blood flow and lower stress on the heart.

Improve Efficient Cooling – By activating the heat-dissipation mechanisms in the body (efficient sweating) an athlete can cool efficiently and help prevent overheating early in the event or race.

Increased Blood Temperature – The temperature of blood increases as it travels through the muscles. As blood temperature rises, the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin weakens so oxygen is more readily available to working muscles, which may improve endurance.

Improved Range of Motion – The range of motion around a joint is increased.

Hormonal Changes – Your body increases its production of various hormones responsible for regulating energy production. During warm-up this balance of hormones makes more carbohydrates and fatty acids available for energy production.

Mental Preparation – The warm-up is also a good time to mentally prepare for an event by clearing the mind, increasing focus, reviewing skills and strategy. Positive imagery can also relax the athlete and build concentration.

So basically, if you want to get the most out of your workout YOU HAVE TO WARM-UP! This is especially true when you’re performing 20 – 30 minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts. These workouts are truly the best kind of workouts for long-term weight loss (fat loss). But, if you miss the warm-up your body isn’t even working at it’s maximum capacity until your already 25-50% into your workout. Obviously, that’s just no good.

Now, check this out…

According to many experts, including Mike Robertson, MS, CSCS, USAW, the ideal warm-up to workout ratio is 1:1. That means if you’re going to do a 20-minute workout you should do a 20-minute warm-up! You might be thinking that’s excessive, but Mike is considered one of the top performance coaches in the world.

Mike suggests a warm-up that includes:

5 minutes of foam rolling

10 minutes of mobility work

5 minutes of dynamic stretching

This is why I’ve always encouraged my Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp members to arrive 15 minutes early to class. Unfortunately, it happens less often than I’d like. So many folks come rushing in a minute or two before class starts up – just in time for the 5-minute dynamic warm-up. Some, come flying in during the warm-up L

I understand that it’s tough to get out of bed or leave the office, but my philosophy is if one person can do it then everyone can do it. If getting results is important enough to you, you’ll find a way to roll out of bed 15 minutes earlier. It really is that simple.

Some may ask, “Why don’t you build the proper warm-up into your boot camp workouts?”

That’s actually a great question and here’s a simple answer…

Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp uses a scientifically proven program design that boosts metabolism and burns fat like no other workout. We accomplish this in under 45 minutes – start to finish. Our goal is to get people in and out. Now, I guess we could make the class longer to incorporate the full-length warm-up. For example, instead of starting at 6:00 am we could start at 5:45 and still be out the door by 6:45. Right?

Hey, wait a minute, how about folks just show up 15 minutes early like we recommend and go through the “pre-game” warm-up? Isn’t that the same thing? ;-b

Now, if you’re not a member Chanhassen’s Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp or Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp ONLINE…you should join ;-b. I’m playing. Well, I’m actually serious, but let me make sure I provide you with something you can do on your own.

At the very least, you should perform a basic warm-up like the ones shown below:

If you want to take it up a notch, perform some foam rolling before the exercises shown above. You can pick up a high quality foam roller that will last forever for under $40.

OK. I’ve preached about warming up enough. Have a great day. I hope your next workout is the best one you’ve ever had.

When it comes to weight loss and fitness, I swear expectations are even worse. Everyone wants results yesterday. And, shows like The Biggest Loser really don’t make it any easier. Viewers see that kind of weight loss and get upset when they can’t do the same – understandably.

Let’s get a couple things straight about real weight loss expectations, and then we’ll get into how we should measure success.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), which is considered to be the gold standard for so many things fitness, weight loss of 1 – 2 pounds per week is a safe and effective goal. Another guideline is 1 – 3% body fat reduction per month.

(By the way, Biggest Loser contestants can see those kinds of results because they’re coming from extremely sedentary lifestyles and they’re extremely obese. Plus they workout 6 hours a day!! They can do that because THAT’S ALL THEY DO, AND they have daily rehab to provide the recovery they need.)

Now, let me completely blow the weight loss standards to hell.

First, imagine I have 30 pounds of fat on my body, and I set my caloric intake vs. caloric outtake to give me a 2-pound weight loss per week. Well, in theory I’d be fat free in 15 weeks, right?

WRONG!!

If that “formula” actually worked I’d also be dead in 15 weeks because a human being can’t survive with NO fat on their body!

Of course, the body has built-in mechanisms that will prevent this. When you go on crash diets and over exercise, you body will lower your metabolism and at the same time “trick you” into eating more.

So, what kind of results can a person expect when following a solid exercise and nutrition program?

Well, you’re not going to like this – EVERYONE RESPONDS DIFFERENTLY.

I’ve had many Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp members drop a dress size in their first two weeks. I’ve had other boot campers take 2 months to do the same. And, yes, some others take much longer. I’ve got one rock star boot camp member who hardly saw any weight loss for a good six months. She got incredibly strong and super-fit. She got rid of all her knee pain and just felt fantastic. Then over the course of about a month she dropped MULTIPLE dress sizes and now looks absolutely amazing!!

So, how the hell do you measure success then?

For this, I’m going to go to one of the success masters – Earl Nightingale.

After several years of intensive research Earl Nightingale arrived at the following definition of success:

“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”

It truly is a marvelous definition of success and it can be applied in every area of your life.

As for weight loss & fitness, let me ask you this:

Are you doing something each day to get just a little bit healthier and more fit?

Are you working CONSISTENTLY to lose weight and get stronger?

Are you giving your best effort with your exercise and nutrition plan?

OR

Are you just going through the motions each day hoping to get healthier and more fit?

Are you missing workouts and meals for than 10% of the time?

Are you giving a half-assed effort with your exercise and nutrition plan?

BE HONEST WHEN YOU ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS.

NOBODY IS GRADING YOU. ;-D

So, if you answered yes to those first three questions then you’re successful and the results you seek will come. It really is that simple. You just have to stick with it and keep those answers as a solid YES.

Let me use myself as a final example to further illustrate my point.

My genetics are not the greatest. I very easily get fat if I’m not consistent with my exercise and nutrition plan. That’s just the way it is. That being said, I can maintain a pretty healthy and fit body if I exercise 4 – 5 times per week and eat healthy most of the time. However, if I want to get in really great shape then I MUST EXERCISE CONSISTENTLY 6 – 7 DAYS PER WEEK AND EAT HEALTHY ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME. That’s just the way it is for me. I don’t bother complaining. I just make a choice.

Recently, I decided that I wanted to take things to the next level so I’ve committed myself to a 7 day per week exercise routine, and a super-tight nutrition plan. In the past 9 weeks I’ve lost 11 pounds of fat weight. And, I feel fantastic!!

I’m not telling you that to show off. I just want to make a point. Check out the picture of my calendar below:

You’ll notice that everyday but one (5/7) is highlighted. That’s the only day I didn’t workout the entire month!! I missed it because I woke up late the day I was flying home from a trip, and I just slacked when I got home. My nutrition was pretty stellar with the exception of a couple planned “treat meals.”

Again, not showing off; just making a point. If I want kick-ass results then I have to follow a kick-ass programming. I was not blessed with do nothing – look great results. Thanks a lot mom & dad. ;-b

So, I ask you, are you progressively realizing a worthy ideal? Are you taking daily steps to achieve your goal?

Remember, wishing for a thing will never bring the thing.

Have Faith & Take Action!

This week I’m going to change it up a little.

We started a new phase in our boot camps using a 20:10 Tabatas High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT) format. The original study that helped put high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the map was the Japanese study by Dr. Tabata and his colleagues. Since then, more and more research has proven the benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on weight loss and fitness.

20:10 Tabatas High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT) boot camp workouts are generally structured as follows:

You will alternate between 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest/transition for each exercise within the circuit. Every 4 minutes of work is followed by 1 minute of rest. You will perform 4 circuits for 20 total minutes.

Your ultimate goal is to be able to perform at least 10 reps per set for each exercise or perform an isometric hold for the full duration for each exercise within the circuit. Once you accomplish this, seek to increase loading or progress to a more advanced exercise variation.

Of course, I power my boot camp workouts with Workout Muse to really get things cranking.

Now, because of the structure of the workout it wasn’t really feasible for me to video my Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp class like I normally do. So, instead, I’m going to share with you a full length version of the Onlive Video Boot Camp workout video!! This will give non-members a chance to see exactly what you get when you join – by the way, you can really test the program out with a 1-month trial by going to www.OnlineVideoBootCamp.com.

OK. Enough talk. Let’s get after it!

I’m out of town today visiting my parents so I wasn’t able to film class. I did get word that everyone kicked butt as usual. Janell said she had a blast teaching this week, and she was really inspired by the dedication and effort of our Look Great at the Lake Boot Camp members.

Well, I didn’t want to leave you hanging without a workout video so I’m going to provide you with a copy of the Online Video Boot Camp version. Note: VBC members, don’t follow this workout today. Your schedule is actually one week behind. Go to the membership site and follow the one there. You’ll find the different fitness level variations there.

30:30 5-exercise Circuit

Perform each exercise in the circuit for 30 seconds followed by a 30 second rest and transition. Be sure to select a resistance/exercise variation that limits you to 6 – 15 reps per 30 second set.

Exercise 1: 2-arm High Pull Variation

Exercise 2: Push-up Variation

Exercise 3: Burpee Variation

Exercise 4: Alternating Horizontal / Wide Row

Exercise 5: Side Pillar Variation w/Reach & Rotate

This year I did well with my tax return – the last two were really rough because my old accountant made a costly mistake…

Well, it turns out there’s another good thing about leaving your high-paying job to start your own business – if you’re still in the red by the end of the year, you can end up getting all the taxes you paid at your old job back.

Fortunately, the boot camp business is rocking now and this year will go quite nicely, especially with all the great things I have in store for you. Good thing I’ve got a new accountant…

You know, tax time is really interesting. Some people get super-stressed because they’re worried about paying, while others are psyched because they purposely had more money taken out throughout the year in order to give themselves a “bonus.” I’m not here to discuss the right philosophy with you; I’m just making an observation.

Anyway, like I said, I got a good chunk of change back. I’m not telling you that to make you feel bad if you didn’t; I’m brining it up because it leads to a very important question –

What will I do with all that money?

The wild and crazy side of me might say, “Let’s go to Fiji!” while the cheap and budget conscious side might say, “Put it all towards debt.”

In fact, I’m doing neither.

Instead, I’M INVESTING IN MYSELF.

I’ve hired one of my mentors, Pat Rigsby and his business partner Nick Berry, to be my private coaches. Pat and Nick are two of the best in the world at what they do – they currently have ownership in over 14 different fitness businesses worth several million dollars. They’ve helped thousands of personal trainers achieve their dreams doing what they love – helping people like you achieve their dreams of looking and feeling great!

This was actually a very rare opportunity for me. Pat & Nick don’t take on private coaching clients. They’re quite busy as you can imagine. Instead, they have a couple mastermind coaching groups with about 10 or so people per group. I previously mentioned in a blog post that I went to Kentucky to visit with Pat for a free one-day group coaching session that’s part of a “boot camp owners association membership” I’m part of. While I was there, we really connected and he asked me if I’d be interested in a unique opportunity – to work with them for 12 months in a private coaching program where we’d meet regularly (weekly calls, in person trips in KY as needed, and daily access via phone and email for urgent needs). In addition, he’s going to provide me with proprietary resources to help me grow my business and become a more knowledgeable fitness professional. And, one of the goals is to come up with some joint venture projects – we’ve already brainstormed one in our first call!

WHAT AN HONOR!! An opportunity to get coached by one of my fitness business heroes and the possibility to create some great things together!!!!

Of course I wanted to jump on the opportunity, but there was only one problem – a BIG ONE. I didn’t have the money.

I’ve heard that excuse so many times in my fitness career. In fact, if I had a dollar for every…

Anyway, there was no way I was going to let this opportunity pass me by. Somehow, someway I was going to make it happen!

If you follow the blog regularly, you know I’m a believer in the Law of Attraction. If you set your mind on a goal with a definiteness of purpose, have faith and take action you will find a way to achieve it. Don’t focus on the “How?” Instead, focus on your “WHY?” With a strong enough “WHY?” the “HOW?” will come. No, I don’t mean it will magically appear, although sometimes it feels like that.

Typically what happens when you focus on something that you really want and connect with your real “WHY?” is you start to see things around you differently – opportunities present themselves. For example, have you have you ever bought something (car, dress, shirt) that you’ve never really seen before and then all of a sudden you see it everywhere? It’s not that it wasn’t there before; you just raised your level of awareness. It’s the same thing with achieving a goal – read chapter 2 of The Science of Getting Fit to see what I’m talking about.

So, what happened? How am I going to be able to afford this opportunity?

Well, if you remember, on my birthday I had a HUGE 35% OFF SALE on my boot camp programs. Now, that wasn’t just some slick way to get money from my campers so I could afford Pat & Nick, although there really wouldn’t have been anything wrong with that – after all, I’m giving an incredible service of mine away at a MAJOR DISCOUNT. I held the sale because I really do value my members and what my programs do for them, and I thought it would be cool to give something big away like that on my birthday.

What happened next was the interesting thing…

I did have some people take advantage of the sale, but I also had a two campers say they’d love to but asked if I would hold the opportunity open (it was a 3 day sale) until they got their tax return.

Before I go on, I just have to say, “THAT’S FREAKIN’ AWESOME!” I love that these people who don’t just have $1500 to throw around want to take part (or all) of their tax return to INVEST IN THEMSELVES. They believe so strongly in the value of my boot camp program (which feels fantastic) that they want to use their tax return, which I’m sure they originally had other (probably not as worthy) plans for. They traded in the new [whatever] that they don’t really need for a healthier, more fit, not-to-mention sexier body. They understand that in the long run, health and fitness is what’s important. If they take care of that, the rest will come as it needs to.

THIS INSPIRED ME!

It turns out that I had the money (most of it) all along to get the coaching that I so badly wanted – the coaching that would no-doubt give me the knowledge, training and connections to help me achieve my goals.

My tax return will cover a little over half the fee to work with Pat & Nick for the next year. A couple more super-committed tax return using boot campers will take care of the rest.

So, thanks to the request and inspiration of my two campers I’m going to extend the 35% OFF SALE through the end of this month – if you e-file, you should have your return by then.
